Higher Education in Iran and the Legacy of the University of Tabriz
Higher education in Iran has a deep-rooted history. During the Achaemenid era (559–330 BCE), higher education in law was a prerequisite for government service, and fields such as medicine, accounting, geography, music, astronomy, and military sciences were also taught. In the Sassanian period, the Gundeshapur University became a global academic hub, attracting scholars from different parts of the world to study disciplines like philosophy, astronomy, theology, law, and medicine.
Following the rise of Islamic civilization, numerous Bayt al-Hikma (Houses of Wisdom) were established across the Islamic world. Among them, Azerbaijan played a crucial role as one of the oldest centers of human civilization, hosting major academic institutions. One of the most remarkable educational complexes was Rabe Rashidi, the largest and most prestigious Islamic educational center, established in Tabriz. This institution, where various sciences of the time were taught, functioned as a scientific and industrial city, comprising five villages, a hospital (Dar al-Shifa), a mosque, a library, a mint, a Sufi lodge (Khanqah), a crafts center (Dar al-Sanaye), and textile and paper production facilities. Additionally, in Maragheh, the largest observatory in the world was established, where scholars from different regions conducted research not only in astronomy but also in numerous related sciences. The observatory’s library housed around 400,000 books.
